José Hernández nació un día como hoy, en el año 1834, y justamente por esa razón se celebra hoy el día de la tradición. Pasó los últimos años de su vida en una quinta donde hoy está el barrio de Belgrano, en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, cuando esa zona no llegaba ni siquiera a suburbio de Buenos Aires.
Hay una anécdota muy poco conocida que refiere Borges en una de las clases que dio en el año 1976 en Estados Unidos y que acaban de publicarse en español. Un Borges joven, de unos treinta, treinta y tantos años, visita a los descendientes de Hernández, quienes siguen viviendo en Belgrano. Todos ellos han continuado con una práctica que aparentemente era habitual en el autor del Martín Fierro: desarrollan rituales espiritistas. Para sorpresa de Borges, uno de los familiares directos de Hernández le dice que se comunica habitualmente con su antepasado y que le está dictando un largo poema que sería la tercera parte del Martín Fierro.
Borges, sorprendido, duda entre seguirle la corriente o asumir que se trata de una broma de mal gusto o de un disparate. Con el tiempo, la duda empieza a ganarle a su mesura y decide volver en búsqueda de ese supuesto manuscrito. Le pide a una amiga suya que lo acompañe y cuando llegan a Belgrano se encuentran con que la familia de Hernández niega tener o haber tenido esa nueva composición del libro que identifica nuestra literatura.
Más allá de la anécdota, surge la inquietud de cómo hubiera sido ese hipotético Martín Fierro III, posterior a la década del 80, cómo hubiera sido ese Martín Fierro en la etapa que se ha convenido en denominar la Argentina moderna.
Es misteriosa la relación entre libros y realidad, nunca sabremos del todo en qué medida un libro puede torcer la historia y en qué medida un pueblo se decide por un libro no tanto por su calidad literaria como por sentirse identificado con él. Es un ida y vuelta complejo.
De todos modos, qué mejor que aprovechar este domingo de lluvia para volver sobre aquellos versos famosos cuyo principio todos recordamos.
